Work to widen the carriageway and upgrade the traffic lights at the Chain House Lane junction on the A582 at Whitestake is now nearing completion. The junction will also be improved to make it easier for cyclists to use, with toucan crossings to allow cyclists to cross alongside pedestrians. So far work has focused on creating more space for traffic and widening approaches to the junction but the project will soon enter the final phase with the start of surfacing work. However, to allow the work to be carried out safely it will involve some temporary road closures. The following closures will be put in place with clearly-signed diversions:
21- 24 October 2014
· Surfacing of western side of A582 Penwortham Way and Chain House Lane, involving a closure of Chain House Lane west of Penwortham Way (towards New Longton). An alternative route will be signed, diverting traffic via Pope Lane.
· Access to properties and businesses will be maintained from the New Longton direction. Please also note that due to restricted road space, there will be no right turn into Chain House Lane (towards Lostock Hall).
27- 31 October 2014
· Surfacing of eastern side of A582 Penwortham Way and Chain House Lane, involving a closure of Chain House Lane east of Penwortham Way (towards Lostock Hall). An alternative route will be signed, diverting traffic via Flensburg Way, Croston Road and Church Lane.
· Access to properties and businesses will be maintained from the Lostock Hall direction. Please also note that due to restricted road space, there will be no right turn into Chain House Lane (towards New Longton).
Between 3 - 4 November, temporary two way traffic control will be in place on Penwortham Way while we finish the resurfacing.
The county council began improvements in May to add capacity to the A582 and improve the junction to reduce delays on one of the key routes in and out of Preston. The upgrading of the A582 is one of the four major road schemes included in the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.
