Time to Relax

Take a stroll in the parks, work-out at one of six leisure and tennis centres, explore local history or enjoy the shopping. When you fancy a break, indulge yourself at one of our many cafés, pubs and restaurants.

Leisure centres at Bamber Bridge, Penwortham and Leyland offer you a choice of sports and fitness activities including swimming at Withy Park Pool, Priory Leisure Pool and Leyland Leisure Centre.

There are golf courses at Penwortham and Leyland and the borough also has its own award winning Tennis Centre offering a first class facility for tennis players of all standards with indoor carpet courts and floodlit outdoor courts.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, explore our network of footpaths and cycle paths including off-road routes along the Old Tramway and by the River Ribble.

We have three major parks for you to unwind in. In Leyland, you can explore the popular Worden Park with its Walled Garden, Crafts Centre and woodland, home to Leyland Festival and music in the park.

Enjoying Events at Samlesbury Hall

Hurst Grange Park in Penwortham offers an attractive landscape of specimen trees, ponds and wildflower meadows for you to relax in while Withy Grove Park’s playground in Bamber Bridge is one of the largest free facilities of its type in the North West. Withy Grove caters for all ages across three different playground zones and is lit during the evenings so you can stay longer.

The north and western area of South Ribble forms part of the Ribble Estuary, an important wildlife habitat where you could enjoy a stroll round Longton Brickcroft wetland reserve, join a “Health Walk” or take on the long-distance Ribble Way.

The area is rich in heritage from the industrial revolution to Roman times and beyond. Samlesbury Hall, on the edge of the Ribble Valley, brings past characters to life to help you explore the Hall’s history. You can travel back in time at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum to when the buses and trucks in the unique collection were in daily use in towns and villages and discover how the area has developed through a talk or seeing one of the many exhibitions at South Ribble Museum.

If you’re hungry, you can sample local produce at Huntley’s or in one of the local villages such as at Penwortham Farmers' Market. Leyland also offers you the chance to browse round the local independent shops and the popular Leyland Market and treat yourself to something to take home.

All this and more is on your doorstep with the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the West Coast within an hour’s drive.

Relax and enjoy yourself
